How to assemble a CD Motor Works motor mount and shaft

This procedure applies to single or double mounts for the Gearbox

All have been designed to work with stock cans, Strong RC setscrew cans.

All need 8 to 9mm protruding beyond the mount to center the pinion on the main gear

(with a stock can you will have 3 to 5mm extending behind the can)

Things you need

  • Shaft
  • Mount
  • Bearings
  • Loctite 609 etc..
  • If you are using a regular GBx 20mm can then you will need, nut and washer or spacers to total 5 to 6mm length and allow the shaft to pass thru (8-32 nuts and washers work great)
  • Magnet can
  • Vise or drill press (check Harbor Freight for a small vice)
  • Scotch tape
  • Cleaning solvent (acetone or alcohol)
  • Ruler capable of measuring Millimeters

  • Clean bearing pockets in mount and outside of bearings (Acetone recommended)
  • Use a toothpick to apply a small drop of Loctite to bearing pockets
  • Have both ends ready and squeeze bearings in using the vice.

  • Put a drop of Loctite on the shaft
  • Push shaft as far as you can into the can
  • Put can/shaft assembly in vice just tight enough to hold it
  • Align can and shaft in the vice as best you can

  • Tighten vice up on shaft with caution
  • If you squeeze too tight you will mushroom the shaft, when it gets tougher stop
  • Put the washer or spacer on a piece of scotch tape
  • Tape it to the back of the can so the hole in the spacer aligns with the shaft
  • Put assembly back in vice and repeat the tightening sequence

  • Take assembly out of vice
  • Put the nut on the shaft
  • Put the washer and scotch tape back on aligning again
  • Squeeze in the vice again

  • Measure the amount of shaft protruding from the mount
  • The shaft should protrude 8 to 9mm
  • Repeat the washer or spacer combo until you get the desired distance
  • Go slow and check often
  • NEVER hammer on shaft or can

Now you're ready to wind the motor
